Residents living near Westmount City Hall were awakened by a crash early Monday morning when a black Toyota hit a tree in front of the Cenotaph on Sherbrooke Street. "The 24-year-old driver was alone at the time of the accident," said Station 12 officer Caroline Gauthier. "He was driving very fast when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree."

Although the driver's life was believed to be in danger when he was taken to hospital shortly after 4 a.m., Gauthier said, "by 8 o'clock the doctors said he will be okay."

An investigation into the accident is ongoing, so Gauthier could not say whether alcohol was involved.
