Could Glen Metropolit need any more motivation? The hustling little centre on the Habs' 4th line is closing in on a "Gordie Howe Hat-trick" during the Canadiens' current streak. He scored a goal in that key win against the Thrashers, registered his first 'bleu, blanc, rouge bagarre' in a fight on Long Island. This morning in Toronto, Metro had his own cheering section...the "Toronto Canadiens" Ballhockey team from Glen's former stomping ground the Regent Park Community Centre.
Metro's trying to help keep these kids off the straight and narrow through his charity program "Goals and Dreams." Crackhead druglord scum unfortunately are setting the goals and perverting the dreams of too many youth in his old 'hood.
Glen knows all too well how closely he came to falling over that line...he called his brother recently who had only bad news from inside Kingston Pen. After serving 12 years behind bars, Glen's kid brother is facing additional charges in connection with the death of another inmate. That could bring another 8 year sentence.
Did you dodge April Fools' mayhem? I couldn't help but think back to that most disturbing morning of my childhood---the first time (guess that makes it the only time) CJAD broke my heart. Ted Blackman aired a story that Ken Dryden was coming out of his first "retirement" to join Les Canadiens for a playoff run. Life was worth living again. That afternoon after school, I proudly donned my big brother's McGill jacket again for ballhockey. I had a cheap Canadiens imitation jersey underneath but that coat was my tribute to the thinking man's goalie back then. Only when I came in for dinner, imaginary Esposito's and Clarke's foiled again, did I learn Blackman had hooked us all on his Poisson d'Avril.
My favourite April Fools' Hoax: I pulled off two good ones when I worked for what is now Virgin 96. I had the exclusive that Bo Jackson was coming to Montreal---the two-sport stud would join BOTH the Expos and the Montreal Machine then of the World League of American Football on loan from the NFL.
But my best, juddging by the flooded switchboards at CJFM, the Canadiens and Celine Dion's record company was the gag that had Celine marrying Russ Courtnall right after her first Leno appearance. Back then we didn't know Rene' Angelil was her true love. But there were rumours of a celebrity love. I can now reveal the Hollywood gossip reporter I created to break the news was actually "The Sheriff" Murray Sheriffs.
APRIL FOOLS HEADLINES I WISHED I'D SEEN THIS WEEK:
Gillett trades share of Liverpool to Hicks for Ribeiro, Morrow and Begin.
STM baffled: Habs have Metro-line that actually works.
PETA signs Michael Vick.
CFL Cap enforcers hired by Auditor-General
Mayor Tremblay:”I’ll resign if F-1 is not back by 2099.
