Euthanasia is NOT murder

Dear Editor,

In regards to Toula's Take "A Good Death", murder, is the unlawful killing of another human being with intent (or malice aforethought), the commission of a murder deprives the victim of their worldly existence.

Euthanasia (meaning a "good death") refers to "a deliberate intervention undertaken with the express intention of ending a life, to relieve intractable suffering".

A life lived in extreme pain is no life at all..., that pain becomes all consuming and there is really no point to your existence at that stage, you just become a sad shadow of the person you used to be and face the prospect of living like that till you die.

Death is, after all, inevitable. Making choices about one’s last days should be nobody else’s business, most certainly in terminal and other untenable situations. Preventing a person’s choice to lessen their suffering is simply inhumane. We treat our pets better than that. There is no malice or intent here to deprive a worldly existence. It’s all about compassion.

I definitely believe that given the option, choosing to die with dignity is a fundamental human right.

People who are very sick, and suffering without hope of recovery, should be allowed to choose a quick and merciful death. But this message is cruel and twisted. It reflects the truth about our society - ANYTHING FOR A BUCK ! Phyllis Carter ......................................................... This morning's topic, CJAD Radio, Tommy Schnurmacher Euthanasia - Above all, do no harm. Doctor's choose to become God; want government to sanction their power. In Quebec, the criminals get off with a slap on the wrist; the sick end up with a death sentence. Reasons why I support Euthanasia It will shorten the waiting lines in the ER. It will save taxpayers' money. You will be able to get a test date quicker. Operation Rooms will be virtually empty. It will solve the problem of doctor shortage. There will be less absences from work by people who will no longer have to look after their elderly and sick relatives. It will be good for the economy because these folks will have more time to hang around in the pubs and restaurants and to go shopping. You will go gently into the good night.
