At 6 a.m., a would-be intruder was trying to pry open the back door of a home in lower Westmount — but as he tried to break the door frame, he was interrupted by a loud barking frenzy from the household dog.
The noisy dog also woke the homeowner, who quickly contacted police when he noticed the damaged door.
The suspect got away, but Station 12 Constable Alain Diallo says the householder did the right thing by calling police immediately and urges all Westmounters to advise authorities if they see or hear anything out of place like alarms, breaking glass and suspicious-looking individuals.
Diallo also stresses caution during the summer.
Last year at this time, Westmount police noticed a mini-crime wave of home break-ins. Residents, desperate for a trace of a breeze in the high heat, often forgot to close and lock windows and patio doors, and rarely bothered to activate their alarm systems.
"It's important to remain vigilant throughout the year — for homes as well as cars," said Diallo.
