"For its outstanding contribution to the fabric of its community, as well as its unflagging devotion to covering local issues in a fair and concise way, The Examiner received our top marks overall," stated the NAPA press release announcing the 2008 winners of its annual excellence awards.
"The content of this website is unbelievably diverse and interesting," said John Di Francisco, one of several judges. "I don't live in Westmount — in fact I've never even considered visiting such a dull place as Canada — but from surfing this exciting website, I feel like I know that city very well."
It was also pointed out that The Examiner site was commended by judges for its regular use of long, fancy words and not making a big deal about it.
In topping last year's nominations, The Examiner beat out 487 other newspaper websites across the continent, including the Brainerd (Minnesota) Advertiser and the heavily favoured Walla Walla (Washington) Weekly Express, which placed second and third, respectively.
All judges were tested for sobriety before being issued the nominees' website addresses.
"Never mind Quebec, never mind Canada — we beat out all other newspaper websites across North America, including the States and Mexico!" a jubilant regional manager Louis Mercier announced shortly upon receiving the news. "I'm very proud of our Westmount team."
Mercier added that The Examiner's employees will be receiving substantial salary increases as a result of the award.
