“The MUHC doctors will talk at libraries as a way of showing the hospitals, and how they work, and what research is happening,”said Donna Lach, Westmount’s outreach librarian. “Last year we had two doctors, and both [events] were packed.”
The first of this year’s presentations will be held on March 17, with the lecture What Every Woman Should Know: Detecting Ovarian Cancer Early delivered by Dr. Lucy Gilbert, director of the Multidisciplinary Gynecologic Oncology Team of the MUHC.
On March 31, the library will host Dr. Joe Schwarcz, who will give a presentation entitled Our Daily Food: Poison or Potion? Schwarcz has written a number of books, with his latest being Science, Sense & Nonsense. His presentation will examine the science behind food and diet.
The series winds up on May 26, when Dr. Dolly Dastoor, a neuropsychologist at the McGill Center for Studies in Aging, and Dr. Lorraine Mazzella, a family doctor on staff at the Montreal General Hospital, will speak on Memory and Aging for Boomers. Mazzella will discuss the nature of the brain, how it ages, risk factors for dementia and ways to keep your brain heathy. Dastoor will speak on memory, and describe different types of memory, and the ways memories are formed. She will also discuss Alzheimer’s Disease, its detection, and its prevention.
Meanwhile, the library continues to expand its pain management collection. A list of books and DVDs currently available may be seen at the Library web site; click on the “catalog” link in the menu bar at the top of the page to see a link to the collection.
Each of the Health Series presentations will take place at 7 p.m. in the Westmount Room of the Westmount Public Library, 4574 Sherbrooke St. W. For more information, call 514-989-5386.
