A permanent installation of ceramic sculpture was unveiled last week at the Montreal Association for the Blind in NDG, created by eight visually impaired students of the MAB's Phillip E. Layton School.

Students Raki Karim, Steven Edgar, Wendy Lin, Iyaz Khalid, Lorenzo Letizia, Sherine Mitchell, Robert Zunenshine and Dominico Albanese each contributed a work to the project, entitled 'Self-Portraits in Clay'.

Created in collaboration with the Visual Arts Centre’s outreach program through the sponsorship of the Webster Foundation, the project was led by well-known artist/teacher Helga Schleeh and Visual Arts Centre Director Victoria LeBlanc, in association with Phillip E. Layton School teachers Deborah Meaney and Angela Sareen.

Through the sense of touch, the young artists learned the proportions and expression of the hands and face and then translated this knowledge into clay self-portraits. The clay forms were then fired in the Centre’s ceramic studio kilns.

For more information on this project, contact Victoria LeBlanc at the Visual Arts Centre at 514-488-9558.
