Howard B. Hoppenheim’s letter and ad hominem attack ("Numbers tell a different story," 3/26/09) is trivial and mostly irrelevant. It suggests he is desperately looking for something negative to say, to camouflage his own lack of constructive input, and to stifle well-reasoned discussion of the issues.
He misses the point.
What many citizens want, and what the City must deliver is a new Arena / Pool that reflects the fact that we live in a densely populated urban area, not in the suburbs.
• Land is at a huge premium
• Parking is extremely limited
• Two Montreal bus lines and commuters use St. Catherine Street
• Westmount Public Service trucks, the armory, and a school are all within a few meters of the arena.
The City has knowingly chosen a location for the arena that has severe limitations. Choices must be made. If we want to preserve green space, then build a smaller structure.
If we want a larger structure, then give up some green space and provide adequate parking and funding. Also be sure to provide sufficient road capacity and policing for the increased volume of users.
Compromises are required when resources are limited. In this case, the scarce resources are land and money.
