Hydro Quebec's Energy Wise home diagnostic program

As environmental issues attract more attention from international NGOs to provincial governments, most West Island municipalities also jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon.

Kirkland, Pointe Claire, Dollard des Ormeaux, Dorval, Beaconsfield, Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Baie d’Urfé and Senneville have all pledged to use funds from Hydro Quebec for environmentally sound projects in their respective municipalities at a news conference held at Kirkland City Hall held Sept. 16.

The amount of Hydro Quebec’s subsidy to municipalities depends on participation from the residents. West Islanders are encouraged to fill out the Energy Wise home diagnostic survey, a 127 question form that will cost $30 to $35, depending if it’s filled online. In return, Hydro Quebec will take the money collected from contributors and give it back for the city’s project.

Kirkland presented one of the most ambitious projects by setting an objective to raise $36,995 for the renovation of a seniors' park as well as a children’s playground. “I think it’s a fantastic project,” said Kirkland Mayor John Meaney. “Hydro Quebec approached me with the idea, and I thought a partnership between the municipalities was worth while.”

Beaconsfield was another municipality showing interest by presenting a unique project of their own. Residents can look forward to a self refrigerated ice rink which will keep skaters busy for the entire season. “When it came time to think about which project (to invest in) I thought ‘what do I get the most calls about’,” said Beaconsfield Mayor Bob Benedetti. “And we realized maintaining 22 ice rinks is very hard especially with the climate we have. By building a refrigerated rink all skaters can look forward to reliably use (the ice rink) from November to March.”

Pointe Claire plans to sue funds from the project for a permanent outdoor stage at Stewart Hall. Dorval will use the funds for bleachers at its new outdoor artificial turn soccer field being erected at the Sarto Desnoyers Community Centre. Dollard and Senneville will use it for tree planting. Ste. Anne will purchase playground equipment for Godin Park. Baie d’Urfé hopes to make improvements at the municipal library.
