This organization serves as a medium for students to serve and lead and learn and teach, with the intention of strengthening the relationship of the students, teachers, and the Westmont community through gardening. Only this year, the garden has harvests 180lbs of produce.

  1. They have a planting calendar

Westmont Garden makes use of a planting calendar for them to know which time is the best for planting. Their calendar indicates when to begin seeds indoors, when to transplant them, and when to place them in the ground with direct sunlight. This helps them make use of their time and money wisely.

  1. They use fertilizers

Same with other gardeners, the school also use fertilizers to keep their plants healthy. To do this, you only need to cultivate the soil and put fertilizers on it. The school buys garden fertilizers, while some students make use of eggshells, kitchen compost, eggshells, and many more.

You may include this technique as well in your garden, or you can also make use of LED grow lights. LED grow lights are cost-efficient than the traditional light used in agriculture. Each LED color has various uses on the plants it produces organic, better, and healthier plants.

  1. Students regularly cultivate the soil

Students have a designated garden to produce plants. One secret to having better produce is by tilling the soil regularly, and that’s exactly what students have been doing.

Working the soil is important in setting up new beds for planting and sowing. This method allows roots to penetrate the fertilizer and the water you put into.

  1. Students water their plants and protect them from insects

Westmont students water their plants regularly. They were taught the appropriate amount of water for each plant variety. If you keep on watering your various plants the same amount of water, you might be doing it wrong. For vegetables and flowers, 1-inch water from the rainfall or irrigation per week is enough. You also need to water the soil to prevent it from drying.

You don’t need to be in an agricultural school though, in order to be a successful gardener. Just follow the footsteps of Westmont students, and you will surely see a lot of harvests in your garden.
